indefinite articles - a and an
a/an + singular
Use a or an when you say what a thing or a person is. A-an has no plural.
A + consonant
If the following word starts with a consonant, then say a.
Examples: a friend, a box, a room, a farmer, a driver, a teacher, a cat, a castle, a pen, a map, a square, a phone, a rabbit, a paper…
1. I go to a restaurant. (The next sound is r)
2.A man drives too fast. (The next sound is m)
3.A dog barks. (The next sound is d)
4.Sharon will read a book. (The next sound is b)
5.Joel drives a purple Audi. (The next sound is p)
An + vowel
If the following word starts with a vowel, then say an.
Examples: an apple, an animal, an uncle, an appointment, an eye, an ear, an arm, an egg, an afternoon, an apricot, an elephant …
1.I will buy an umbrella before the rain starts. (The next sound is u)
2.The news report an alligator attack. (The next sound is a)
3.Lily wants an ice cream. (The next sound is I )
4.An eager child runs into the store. (The next sound is e)
5.The boy will pick up an orange cup. (The next sound is oh)
Exceptions a and an
Examples: a user, a unit, a European, a union, a URL, a unicorn, a history …
Examples: an honor, an hour, an hourglass…
Definite article "the":
The Definite Article ‘the’ generally specifies and identifies a person, place, or thing already known:
Examples: the ball, the bag, the house, the dog, the pig.
The worst, the doors, the cars, the players, the television ….
