The past simple tense, also known as the simple past tense, is used to describe actions or events that occurred and were completed in the past. This tense is used to talk about actions that are not happening anymore or have no connection to the present. The structure of the past simple tense involves using the past tense form of the main verb.

Structure:

Positive: Subject + past tense of the verb

Negative: Subject + did not (didn't) + base form of the verb

Question: Did + subject + base form of the verb?

Examples:

Positive: She visited her grandparents last weekend.

Negative: They didn't watch the movie.

Question: Did you finish your homework?

Usage:

Completed Actions: The past simple tense is used to talk about actions that started and ended in the past.

Example: He played the piano yesterday.

Past Habits: It's used to discuss actions that were habitual or repeated in the past.

Example: She always walked to school when she was a child.

Example: Once upon a time, there lived a brave knight.

Specific Time: It's used to indicate actions that occurred at a specific time in the past.
